CMG Financial’s General Counsel, Shannon Leight, Featured in Vanguard Law Magazine

CMG Financial, the well-capitalized privately held mortgage banking firm headquartered in San Ramon, CA, has been recognized in Vanguard Law Magazine's Summer 2023 Edition III alongside General Counsel, Shannon Leight. Vanguard is a digital publication that showcases the diversity of modern in-house counsel by highlighting the philosophies, strategies and initiatives of attorneys at some of the world's most recognizable companies including Samsung, Heineken, Pfizer, MetLife, Dell, MasterCard, and now CMG Financial.

Leight joined CMG in 2021. Two years later, she found herself in the middle of one of the industry's largest retail acquisitions of the past decade. Earlier in 2023, CMG acquired a retail division at Homebridge Financial Services, which originated $12 billion last year. Leight, CMG's only in-house lawyer at the time, played a huge role in the acquisition every step of the way - from drafting the letter of intent, discussing buyer must-haves, covering financial specifics, going through due diligence, and finalizing documents. Her extensive efforts resulted in a very successful and seamless cohesion between the two companies.

"If there's a consistency to this industry, it's the ever-evolving changes that largely fall on a legal department to navigate," wrote Neil Cote, author of Leight's Vanguard feature. "It's always a challenge, Leight says, to stay at least in line with market conditions."

Much of CMG's success in recent market conditions can be attributed to the internal adjustments and efforts from people like Leight. She works extensively with sales, marketing, compliance, and leadership to ensure that CMG remains within the boundaries of the industry's regulations while still pushing the limits of innovation and tech.

"I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with inspiring leadership and to grow professionally alongside CMG," said Leight. "I know that I'm in the right place to continue growing and stepping into new challenges. The more CMG rolls out, the more opportunity I get to dive into something new, which is what I love to do."

"Shannon has been instrumental to our growth and success over the past few years," said Kim Callas, Executive VP, Chief Operating Officer. "The housing market has changed drastically since 2019 - even since 2021. Many companies have downsized and faced cuts, yet CMG has increased by roughly 48% over the past year. This is largely a result from Shannon's hard work that led to the successful acquisition of Homebridge's retail division. We're thankful to have her on our side as we continue to navigate the constant changes within the market."

Worthwhile Wear's 2023 Act Challenge

Worthwhile Wear's 2023 Act Challenge was open to any and all participants. Over 850 people completed miles to raise awareness of the issue human trafficking by running, biking, walking, swimming and paddling

On July 30, we recognized "World Day Against Trafficking" and on that same day Worthwhile Wear released the results of the national "Act Challenge." Participants and supporters from all over the globe logged miles in their communities and raised awareness about human trafficking with their actions by completing more than 192,000 miles. Worthwhile Wear operates a variety of restorative programs supporting survivors of trafficking and created the "Act Challenge'' as a way for the larger community to get involved. "When people hear about human trafficking, they want to act and get involved, so we created a way for people of all ages, abilities and locations to join with us in providing care to survivors, while also raising awareness about this growing issue," shared Dan Emr, Founder and Executive Director of Worthwhile Wear. As the challenge ran from May 1st to July 30th, individuals, groups, businesses, schools, churches and people from all over joined the mission by unlocking pledged dollars with every mile logged. Through the generosity of the Act Challenge sponsors and the efforts of all those who logged miles, over $102,000 was raised through the event which in turn will enable Worthwhile Wear to continue providing community outreach, long-term housing, employment, counseling, and restorative services to survivors of human trafficking. Since over 40 million people are trafficked worldwide, many survivors do not have access to resources for dealing with trauma, abuse, and addiction. Worthwhile Wear is forging a path for everyone to be a part of the solution. Dan Emr, Executive Director and Founder of Worthwhile Wear, is available for in-person or virtual interviews to discuss this event and the issue of human trafficking. Visit www.WorthwhileWear.org to learn more.

Worthwhile Wear is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to reaching lives affected by human trafficking and restoring these survivors with a sense of belonging and worth. The road to healing requires a comprehensive response. It's not enough to offer a single solution, which is why Worthwhile Wear first engages survivors where they are, in our communities, then offers long-term stability with safe housing, and finally provides them with opportunities for financial independence by employment through its thrift stores. This wraparound approach is how Worthwhile Wear offers the most comprehensive services to survivors of trafficking in the state of Pennsylvania.

BigHand's latest market research reveals new trends and insights into how law firms are responding to the changing economic climate

New Research Confirms Lack of Visibility Creating Stand-Off Between Law Firms and Staff Over Hybrid Working
BigHand 2023 Legal Industry Report

Open book with research and data on the pages. The research pertains to the legal industry's response to new market dynamics.

The latest research on how firms are responding to new market dynamics and economic downturns from BigHand was released today. The newest report in the series focuses on the conflict between law firms and legal staff over hybrid working. While hybrid working was initially embraced with enthusiasm following the pandemic, recent developments have led to firms pushing for a return to the office to maximize productivity and boost efficiency. Staff, however, are reluctant to move back to the office after benefiting from flexible working and a better work-life balance. Firms now face numerous challenges in striking the right balance to keep workflows efficient and profitable while meeting client expectations.

The research highlights that the current hybrid model is not delivering optimal results, especially for lawyers who find themselves burdened with administrative work due to the lack of visibility and engagement with support staff. The statistics show 23% of respondents still say lawyers are doing more work themselves, rather than delegating due to hybrid working. The consequences of these inefficiencies are significant, with clients now demanding complete transparency in resource utilization and looking for the most cost-effective resource to handle their legal work.

Key data from the report includes:

  • 75% of respondents confirm they have experienced a drop in demand for legal services over the past 12 months
  • 91% of respondents - and 96% of Support Managers - confirm that hybrid working would improve with better visibility of workloads
  • A third (31%) of legal staff would also like to have more flexible working hours.
  • 50% of firms are still reliant on manual processes and reporting to manage the volume of tasks sent from lawyers to support staff

The in-depth market research provides valuable insights to better navigate hybrid working without efficiency losses. Working models and employee expectations have changed and law firms need to create a far more effective approach to the allocation of tasks - one that supports the expectations of both staff and clients. Without improvements in operational efficiency, firms will struggle to retain staff, clients and profit in the face of new economic and commercial pressures.
